Robotics and Coding by Age: A Learning Path from 3.5 to 19

Age indicates a possible starting point, but two students of the same age may differ in experience, independence and problem-solving style. A program should therefore consider both age and readiness.

The NeusLab learning pathway has four connected stages: Minis, Elementary, Junior and Senior. Each next level introduces new ways of reasoning and more complex technical systems.

The age boundaries are guides, not automatic placement rules. Before classes begin, we meet the student in an assessment class and look for a group where the task will be understandable, engaging and appropriately challenging.

Minis: ages 3.5–6

Learning is based on practical play, observation, sorting and construction. Children explore simple sequences, movement and cause-and-effect relationships while learning to make a prediction and test it.

Elementary: ages 6–9

This stage develops logic, spatial thinking, first algorithms and measurement. Students learn not only to reach a result but also to explain the steps that led to it.

Junior: ages 10–14

Programming connects with sensors, mathematics, physics and systematic debugging. Students design more complex behaviour, compare solutions and learn to locate the source of an error.

Senior: ages 15–19

Older students progress to advanced programming, autonomous systems, optimization and the defence of technical decisions. Independent project and competition work becomes more prominent.

How to determine the starting level

Placement considers interest in technology, previous experience, the ability to stay with a task and readiness to work without constant prompting. An assessment class reveals these traits in practice and helps identify the right group.
